81. RICHARD DAWKINS: The lucky ones
Richard Dawkins (1941-) is the world’s most famous atheist, thanks to his best-selling book The God Delusion and his tireless work to promote secularism through media and public appearances. Though he is probably more well-known today for his views on religion, Dawkins is first and foremost an evolutionary biologist. He has dedicated his life to studying evolution and to him it must be so bleeding obvious, and so much more awe-inspiring and beautiful, that the complexity of life on Earth is thanks to Natural Selection rather than Intelligent Design.
– Thanks to Martin for submitting this. It’s taken from Dawkins’ book Unweaving the Rainbow. I also read it in the forward to Christopher Hitchens’ memoir Hitch-22.
– Dawkins features in the brilliant documentary series Inside Nature’s Giants, where animals are dissected to help illustrate how they work and where they evolved from. Highly recommended, but not for the squeamish. (The whole series is on YouTube)

Very nice work as always, thank you very much!
Touching visuals and an extraordinary quote. Well done.
Love it. We are more unique than we can even comprehend.
Interesting this quote coming from him seems almost like an argument for a higher power.
I think this is more an example of why he doesn’t believe in a higher power; there’s so much that’s so amazing, without us being special, just being here.
Being in awe of the universe, of being alive needs no belief in a higher power. There are greater things that exist beyond ourselves without having to resort to belief in god or gods. 🙂
O look.. another dumbfuck
Mike, that was uncalled for.
Second.
Shame on you, Mike.
In an offering that espouses awe for our very being, you create a foul current that offsets that thought.
Consider life outside of your tiny box, Mike.
It’s all the rage.
I like you, Dark Hours
Oh dear, I’m afraid you really have missed the point.
another “thank you” to 9gag.com for dragging my attention to your wonderful works.
keep on doing what you do!
Beautifully done. I think this is my favorite – and I’m not even an evolutionist.
… you know it’s not a choice right? Whether you believed it or not, you’re current existence is the result of evolution.
How do you know that life is a result of evolution? there is still no proof. Yes, it is a choice, since you have made your choice to believe in science.
There are two choices in life, one road leads to destruction, death. science is your God, the other road leads to eternal life and Jesus, God.
Ye its not a choice, evolution exists. God, well, who knows? And if your sure he does exist, your nuts. Not a person on earth can say if he does or doesn’t. Oh, and life is not eternal, it ends. Along with every living thing. Take pride in your life, don’t was it on the afterlife(death is another word for afterlife)
There is a choice to be an ‘evolutionist’, since that just means you believe in evolution. It could easily be real but people still have the ooption to not choose it if they wish
There is also a choice to be a “Gravitionist,” more simply stated “One who believes in gravity.” It is real but people still have the options to not choose it if the wish.
In case you didn’t get my point it is that anyone can choose or not choose to believe in anything they want, but, in the end these specific things either are or are not true, whether or not you believe them has absolutely no baring on the reality of them. So yeah you could say that about anything, but that aargument really has no affect on the truth.
PS I am by no means saying that evolution has as much evidence and can be held as truth in the same way as gravity is. Obviously gravity is undoubtebtly real, while evolution cannot be 100% proven (or atleast it isn’t yet.) But the fact remains that there is much more evidence pointing in the direction of evolution then there are in other directions like say, creationism (which has 0 evidence and 100% faith (which means belief with no evidence so….. yeah)) so, being an individual who values truth more than lies, the only logical conclusion is to go with the evidence and, atleast until evidence disproves it (which i doubt it will,) believe in evolution.
Actually, the Theory of Evolution by Natural Selection has far more evidence than the Theory of Gravitation, mostly because the Theory of Gravitation is wrong. (Or not as correct, according to Isaac Asimov)
I encourage you to read this evolution disproven by cold hard mathematics. http://www.ldolphin.org/wmwilliams.html
That is one of the poorest excuses for “math” and rebuttals that I have ever had the misfortune of reading.
I’m all about my Savior, Jesus Christ. Evolution is a ridiculous idea.
“evolutionist?”
Evolution is a scientific theory, you either understand the facts, or you are ignorant of them, it is not a belief, it is not something taken on faith, it is an understanding gained through study. So all you are saying is that you are not scientifically literate.
You need to realize that unlike religious beliefs, science is not something you can just choose to believe in because it makes you feel warm and fuzzy, scientific understanding is a result of gaining knowledge and understanding of the reality and the warm fuzzy feelings you have with that are result of truly beginning to grasp how very similar we all are how interconnected all life and matter is.
Science revealed to mankind that we are children of the stars of the past, every atom in us was created in fusion furnace of the suns that exploded and life that EVOLVED in abundance of molecules and atoms created by those stars was nothing more than a result of chemical interaction under certain set of conditions not even all that hard to meet on cosmological scale.
So no, there are no evolutionists, there are people who understand science, and have read the facts and then there are people like you who ignore the facts because they can not overcome the fear of reality in their egoistical desire to be the center of the universe.
I’m an evolutionist but unlike these two above I respect your beliefs even if I don’t agree with them.
Todd, looks like you kind of missed the point….
I think I’m going to stop being a gravitationalist so I’ll be able to fly.
There is nothing disrespectful in either of the posts you object to, they merely explain the difference between unfounded belief and evidence based knowledge. In any event why should one respect a “belief”, one should respect other human beings certainly but the idea that one should show respect to a belief is nonsensical. If you mean you respect someone’s right to believe something, that is quite different, but respecting such a right does not involve pretending unfounded belief and evidence based knowledge are equally valid or being prevented or discouraged from challenging erroneous beliefs. The truth of a belief matters.
“Evolution is a scientific THEORY, you either understand the facts, or you are ignorant of them, it is not a BELIEF” — synonyms for theory include: conjecture, supposition, speculation, guess, hunch, opinion, BELIEF, thinking.
You are using synonyms for the regular concept of theory, not the concecpt of “Scientific Theory”, which is what you’re dealing with here. Just because everyone shortens it, doesn’t mean you can start using synonyms from the wrong term to make a point.
If you check the definition for that, you see:
A scientific theory is “a well-substantiated explanation of some aspect of the natural world, based on a body of facts that have been repeatedly confirmed through observation and experiment.”
Which makes no reference to it being any kind of “belief” at all, but based on cold hard facts.
Plu, it’s all an illussion perpetuated by man to control you gullible souls.
Evolution is a scientific fact. It was observed and discussed long before Darwin. Darwin theorized that evolution occurred through natural selection. Someone else is free to theorize that evolution occurred by tinkering from the intelligent designer when he realized his work needed to be fixed. Scientists since Darwin have found that natural selection fits everything we know about biology.
well about natural selection fitting in everything it’s in concurrent discussion, it depends in school of thought that you stand, but the intelligent designer is the last in the list, holy universe for that… 😛
Well, no, not really. Hard work has been done to make it seem as if there is a debate, but there certainly isn’t one within the scientific community, and the only ones contesting it offer alternative religious explanations, never a scientific one – what does that tell you?
The problem with the analogy of ‘theory’ is that it tends to imply reliability, that is often unmerited.
A previous scientific theory argued the earth was flat based on the perspective of those looking out to the horizon. Our horizon has broadened and we perceive we now have a more solid basis for our theories… the truth being that all theories are scientific, which implies that they are based solely on the facts at hand with the potential to be dropped or changed as more facts are gathered.
Evolution fits our current facts, but it fails to account for itself or the universe as a whole.. we need other theories that bring it all together, these are not yet known or even implied.
We are still walking apes with a little bit of knowledge, banging our clubs on the ground in excitement.
Everything we know is a belief, a meaning made from a primitive mind. As Socrates eloquently put it, “all I know for certain, is that I know nothing” (paraphrased).
Let’s quit arguing and celebrate the colourful imaginations of mankind as a whole.
Hi Roman, great comment, I always think about the theory that had all the facts to say that the sun orbits around the earth when I see people arguing about the validity of evolution. I also like to remember a cartoon (not sure if it was Simpsons or South Park or other…) that showed that after a long time all humans became atheists but they were split between two types os atheists and were still fighting. I am a scientist and I see evolution as a great explanation considering our current knowledge and availability of facts but I am scientist because I love to find out new facts and help to expand the previous knowledge which sometimes show that it wasn’t quite right. One day egg is bad for health the next one it is ok :D.
You clearly did not get this definition of THEORY from a scientific text. Which is exactly the problem when non-science types argue that evolution is “just” a theory. Your defs more appropriately fit with what science would refer to as an HYPOTHESIS.
Excuse me, ATHORIST? But you say Theory, and than you state it is fact?
Look up what a scientific fact and theory are, you complete moron.
It is BOTH.
“Evolutionist” is what C.S. Lewis called people who believed that evolution has a direction and purpose. He used the capital E to indicate the pseudo-religious belief that humans are the end result of evolution – ignoring that evolution is continuing and will continue if humans die out.
I agree with PLU, the very title “title” means that it is not a “LAW”, therefore there is an aspect of belief, though it may be supported by a flood of observations.
Oh please look at the facts before you call someone egotistical over their beliefs. Here read this, http://www.ldolphin.org/wmwilliams.html evolution meets math.
The stupid, it hurts.
It’s so hard to believe that the more energetic critics of religion are the ones that least understand it.
As a forensic chemist who attended Catholic school from K-12, I’ve learned that statement is just as true replacing the word “Religion” with “Science”
Are you seriously suggesting that Dawkins doesn’t understand religion just because he believes that its premises are wrong?
YES
you clearly didnt read what he said. It said that its hard to believe the bigger critics understand it least, which would imply that he expects those who bleieves its premises are wrong do understand it. Im the same way..but with dawkins, his objections towards religion are flawed, and honestly, idiotic, he could go about it in a much better way, but kind of just fails at it. And yes, he does not understand the religion he advocates against
Watch out for typos, Luis: you spelt science wrong.
Speaking as a former clergyman and lifelong student of faith and reason, I find Mr. Dawkins to be most knowledgeable on matters of theism. In my limited experience, it is believers who’s understanding and ability to reason is handicapped.
Richard Dawkins, like many atheists, is extremely knowledgable (as you point out) about the religions he challenges. It is the inevitable consequence of listening, reading and studying ALL the available evidence when considering the arguments for and against something. My experience is similar to your own in that I have found it is overwhelmingly the “Believers” whose knowledge is restricted, often even of their own sacred texts. I have witnessed many debates on religion and on evolution (and taken part in more than a few) over the last half century and it continues to sadden and (even after encountering it so often) surprise me that even prominent apologists have gathered their understanding of evolution not from biologists but from other theists and consequently have only exposed themselves to “straw man” distortions of evolutionary theory and its supporting evidence. The “bubble” that they have constructed for themselves to inhabit seems quite impervious, I have heard biologists and atheists patiently explain areas to theists that they have completely misunderstood and misrepresented and on which they often base their entire objections to Evolution, only to hear these same apologists repeat the same errors and distortions in the next debate. The role of probability in evolution is a classic example, another is the meaning of the word “theory” in the context of the scientific method as opposed to general use aegis another (indeed it raised its hoary head in the earlier posts on his topic). Many theists also seem to get their knowledge of their own religion and its texts from narrow sources other than the primary ones, I have lost count of the times I have brought a christian’s attention to something in the bible during a discussion only to find they were completely unaware of it, even those who actually do read more than a guided selection of the bible often seem to read it with such preconceived ideas of its content that they fail to appreciate what the text is actually saying.
false.
generally it’s the fervently religious who know the least about religion. atheists are usually those that searched for validity and truth in the scriptures, but after more and more investigation, couldn’t remain in the belief. as penn jillette often says: the quickest way to become and atheist is to read the bible.
This is great! Try looking at it backwards too 🙂
I dig the “backwards timeline” thing you’ve got going on there
Gav,
I’ve first visited your site when a Kung fu student in the same academy as mine posted the Buddha quote about happiness, my favorite so far. I’ve become a fan, subscribed and visiting your site became routine.
I think I’ve never commented here before, but this one deserves it.
Your approach on the the quote was just brilliant! I don’t even know how to put it on words.
Thank you and congratulations.
still powerful even when looking at it backwards
My grandmother is dying of cancer right now. In a matter of weeks, she won’t be here anymore. This came at just the right time. Thank you so much for this.
You’re welcome Summer, I’m glad it could help.
What a great comic. Great job Gav.
May I ask why did you choose to depict the characters’ lives in reverse?
The quote starts with death so I started the story at the end.
If you read this from bottom to top, it still make sense 😀
Awww, Gav! Amazing thought. Very intense and lovely 🙂
Thank you
Tremendous. Most heartfelt and deep comic & quote in… A few weeks?
big fan of your site and this latest is definitely one of your best, instant classic!
Excellent choice of quote and I like the way it seemed to start at the end and work it’s way back to where it all began. Accepting your mortality is the first step to truly living. Once you accept and believe in life BEFORE death, you realize how much more important every second is.
If anyone is a fan of Dawkin’s books, I would also recommend Dan Barker’s “Godless”. The first half of the book is an autobiographical depiction of Barker’s life (A devout Evangelical preacher who later became a fervent Atheist) and the second half is philosophical discussion about religion, god, ethics and morality. Where Dawkin’s books are written by an evolutionary biologist, Barker’s works contain more simplified language that may be less intimidating to people without a firm science foundation.
Sounds interesting, thanks for the recommendation GT
Good choice. Dan Barker also possesses the gift to convey in words how painful -but liberating- such transition has been for him.
That was very nicely done! I love that quote by him!
This is an excellent use of time reversal. Once again Gavin, you have done it beautifully!
Good god, that’s epic. Well done.
Oh, why did this quote have to come from Dawkins. I really dislike him and his lack of respect for other people’s views on religion. But this is such an awesome quote…
I’m also disappointed that GAV is proud about him.
He is just a fanatic, there’s better atheists out here.
He is not a fanatic, neither does he disrespect religion so long as it stays out of government and science. He is a scientist who defends reason, and isn’t afraid to criticize religion. If you look past the uncomfortable idea that you might be wrong about something, he turns out to be a really nice guy.
And if you think Dawkins is ever harsh with his words, get a load of Christopher Hitchens.
“there’s better atheists out there”.
(I am sure there also are better users of Grammar.) But to get to my question: I would very much appreciate if you were to explain what, in your opinion, makes an atheist better than another?
Pointing out that a belief is erroneous, particularly when one does so by explaining the evidence that demonstrates this to be the case is NOT disrespectful either of the person who holds that belief or of their right to believe as they do. You seem to be asserting that one should respect the belief itself which implies that no one should be allowed to question it’s veracity. Whether a belief is true or not MATTERS, it determines people’s actions and choices and has consequences for other people and society. When such beliefs are demonstrably wrong they SHOULD be challenged. Historically the disrespect for people’s beliefs has come from the religious side with widespread restriction of ideas, denial of scientific fact and persecution of “unbelievers” and heretics. In the present day fanatical religious people have responded to novels, cartoons and films with threats of violence and actual violence. To characterise Professor Dawkins, who rarely shows less than impeccable manners to those with whom he disagrees even under substantial provocation, as a “fanatic” is ridiculous and offensive. If you want to see what disrespect looks like Google up a picture of Theo Van Gogh’s mutilated corpse lying in an Amsterdam street for making a film about domestic violence to women in Islamic communities.
Thanks for the informed comments Bookworm, completely agree with you.
Sigh. Ah yes, the old “he’s so disrespectful and he’s so fanatical”.
Strangely enough none of the religious fanatics that claim such can ever produce anything to back up such a claim.
And the best part? When they do, it’s always some basic refutation he’s presented to some ridiculous claim by a religious fanatic.
the backward timeline really amazes me – always.. and you’ve kinda nailed it here again!!
but i wonder what’s with the thick glasses both of them wear…
a quote to relish because it’s both scientific (when you think of how he addresses the probability concept) and simple existentialism (take the basic meaning of the term).
The bespectacled have been sorely underrepresented on Zen Pencils
I was thinking along the lines of even though they weren’t genetically perfect, they still had a shot at life. Unlike many others who may have been born with perfect vision.
Thought provoking as always. Your interpretation of the quote and when you put it within a context with your comics makes the quote even more solid.
One of your best yet, keep up the amazing work!
Wonderful, Gavin. Also love where the money made from sales will go. I’ll gladly buy a print. 🙂 foundation beyond belief, and medicine sans frontiers are two other charities worth thinking about. RDF also gives to these.
Absolutely lovely and brilliant at the same time Gav.
This is my favorite Richard Dawkins quote, it basically describes my so-called spirituality as an atheist. Thank you for piking thins one and for making this comic.
Keep up the awesome work;)
”It’s raining DNA outside.”
Simply awesome!!
Oh, this is so Romantic. Love it 😉
Certainly one of your most poignant offerings, Gav.
And very touching and sweet, yet with the enormity of the message intact.
If we could live our lives from the end backward,
wonder what we’d do differently
knowing the ending?
s
Thank u so much for Zen Pencils!
What you don’t know, Gavin, is that the year before I was born, my parents miscarried. They’d always said they’d have only 3 children; and the little girl they lost would have been it. If my sister had been born as planned; my parents would have had a medical procedure to prevent further pregnancies; and I would never have been here. What you don’t know is how much this quote speaks to me, and strikes my heart.
Thank you.
Wow, great story Matt – thank you.
You outdo yourself every time.
hey does this artist really hate religion? im just asking:0 i mean i like this comic very much but im not athiest ,i have nothing against athiests btw.
i just stumbled upon this… its nice:)
Can only religious people say beautiful things?
“The fanatical atheists are like slaves who are still feeling the weight of their chains which they have thrown off after hard struggle. They are creatures who — in their grudge against the traditional ‘opium of the masses’ — cannot hear the music of the spheres.”
– Einstein.
Have not read Dawkins, I’m sure he’s not fanatical, but I’m also sure a lot of his “followers” are…
“All I know is, I’m not a Marxist” – Marx
i am never forgive my parents because it is their fault that i am going to die… and it was their fault i am living with pain and suffer… of every thing… even when i imagine that my lovely parents die…
please… for sake of evolution make love not baby
Hey, no fair! Looking at the pictures in reverse made me cry.
great art
Truly inspirational and one to dwell on.
I think I just found my new pick up line…
OMG this is brilliant in every way.
How can someone so clever be so dumb? I sometimes despair of the human race.
This one moved me to tears! Well done Gavin. It’s not the first one that’s done it and it sure won’t be the last one either.
It is almost towards higher power..but depends on how u see it, the element of luck, that one sperm responsible for our existence is quoted here……
For some reason the characters in this comic remind me of Henry and Clare from “The Time Traveler’s Wife”! Especially the physical depiction! Lucky chance?
its a fun site
the couple steadily turning younger was a nice touch…
if only we can all live a healthy long life, but to do so with a loved one beside us… till the end…
Thats why we need to always remember to live life. Savor, treasure and seize every moment that comes by because life is short.
AN UNKNOWN IS ALWAYS AN UNKNOWN.UNLESS WE GET ACCESS TO KNOW THE UNKNOWN,EVRYTHING IS UNKNOWN.
This is one of my favorite cartoons. Brilliant work, Gav.
Even reading it from bottom to top it’s good
I loved it. Here is what I wrote early this morning when I shared it on fb:
****
I take a deep breath and close my eyes
exhaling slow; calmness spreads
my story – it is not yet written
and there is yet work to be done
another breath
exhale
I have been a fool
playing with the most precious gift
in the universe
and taking it for granted
another breath
exhale
For the poets, artists, and scientists who are all of one mind, in full compos mentis, who change our perceptions of what it means to walk this path, for again, the wonder…
…I am alive.
****
Thank you for your wonderful gift.
Beautiful, thanks Claes
Dawkin’s is great in how he has helped change lives for the better. I am one of the people who hid for years while surrounded by god worshippers. When I finally came out, it was difficult for awhile but soon became very rewarding and liberating as my confidence grew to a new level.
Quick question, what did Dawkins earn his degree in?
Evolutionary Biology.
This quote itself is very ambiguous. You can either wonder how there’s only probability and you being here and not someone far better proves this, or think of how such unlikely set of coincidences could culminate into you if there wasn’t something that could turn probability in your favor, like what some call God. Either way, something is true: the universe is, according to the most recent theories (relativity included) finite, even though it is expanding. Therefore, in a finite space, the amostral probability of an event is also finite. Based on this, I can’t understand when someone says that we’re just ordinary, that life is just ordinary.
Liking or not, we are special. The probability of a planet with ideal conditions for life being formed, in a perfect distance from it’s star, in a good location in it’s galaxy, with all the due and necessary chemicals to start life based on carbon and water, that is able to associate with lifeforms, evolve and reach the point where they can think and explore things they can’t see (for fundamentalist atheists that may criticize me at this point: I’m talking about extradimensions and quantum mechanics) is so extremely small that, doing the math, probably even if you had a googolplex of decimal aproximation, it would still be zero.
Even if you say that there’s life out there in the universe, we haven’t assured contact with any extraterrestrial lifeform. So, even if you insist, probability isn’t in your favor. What is left is only belief. So, it doesn’t matter what you believe in or not, but I think is just wrong for anyone to state that we’re ordinary, that life is ordinary. We are special.
I won’t say what I believe in, as it isn’t necessary, but I have to say I desagree with mr. Dawkins method, specially after watching one documentary of his. Nevertheless, this quote is fantastic as a way to express the joy that is to be alive, we are here despite everything in favour of us not being.
I’m really sorry for the long post, and I don’t know if someone will ever read it, but I’d certainly like if someone did. Also, sorry if there were many errors in my text, English isn’t my native language, and sometimes they just happen.
Yes we are very special, disobedient, hell bent on destroying humankind because of science, the science of the knowledge of good and evil, science is slowly choking us to death.
Thank you absolutely beautiful and meaningful
I want to buy this print, please tell how can I do it.
Did anyone else notice that he is gave her roses when he met her
And is also giving her roses when they depart?
Thats is so beautiful. The first and the last slide have a certain feel of sad and happy and the promise of being together till the end of time..
One of my favorites!
-S
P.S.: I remember seeing this in your store, missing now. I wanted to buy it 🙁
Not sure if the last sentence under the comic is your thought or someone else’s, but (IMO) natural selection is part of the process of intelligent design. I don’t believe there’s an old man in the clouds making specific things happen, either.
Witness: http://youtu.be/rx31y1KKK3E
Wow. Just, brilliantly done. To the point and such a nice interpretation.
A lot of talk about nothing. We are living biological creatures . We wil all die , when or where we do not know . This is life on this planet . Religion has nothing to do with this . Man is his own worst enemy , he is the predator on this planet .
I like the artwork and the thought provoking dialog but I have 2 questions:
1. Is that Princess Astra with you?
2 As a biologist, what is your view on Biorhythms?
Thankyou for your opinions and outlook
Thank you absolutely beautiful and meaningful
Beautifully done. I think this is my favorite – and I’m not even an evolutionist.
Continue awesome execute which empower it to you will definately get accomplishment over the long haul.

This is my first time visit here. From the huge amounts of remarks on your articles,
Might want to see some different posts on the same subject! This is a great post.
Evolution has not, nor will it ever be correct when man makes the decision that we evolved, arrrrrh, from what and to what, billions of earth years have past, from big bang to now, hmmmmm, me think it verrrry interesting that many of Earth’s people have such closed minds regarding creation, as to evolving from ans atom.
I presumption I am not the alone one tolerating all the beguilement here!
This is really an awesome read for me. I have bookmarked it and I am anticipating perusing new articles.
This is such an incredible asset, to the point that you are giving. I cherish seeing article that comprehend the benefit of giving a quality asset to free.

It is not regular that I have the likelihood to see something like this.I expected that would say that its bewildering to fathom that someone else furthermore said this.
Is really funny to me how you changed the context of the quote by taking the last sentece away, “We privileged few, who won the lottery of birth against all odds, how dare we whine at our inevitable return to that prior state from which the vast majority have never stirred?” It goes from love to classic dawkins rant lol
You finished certain reliable focuses there. I did an enthusiasm on the subject and found about all persons will concur with your site.
I positively getting a charge out of every last bit of it. It is an uncommon site and wonderful offer.
How stunning are the changes which age makes in a man while he sleeps
Flawlessly, the weather continued. As it was with the garden, so it was with the meadows. The rhomboid fields below the Blandings house lay warped on the hills, and each was a bedazzling flung scarf of wildflowers.
Thank you Gavin for your “RICHARD DAWKINS: The lucky ones” comic post

Thank u so much for Zen Pencils!
intresting!
thank you.

Love Richard Dawkins!!
He is so right!
Love him so much Richard !
Though he is probably more well-known today for his views on religion, Dawkins is first and foremost an evolutionary biologist.
Thank you so much for your cartoon
Those are the lucky ones
Thanks to Martin for submitting this. It’s taken from Dawkins’ book Unweaving the Rainbow. I also read it in the forward to Christopher Hitchens’ memoir Hitch-22.
